Lewis Carroll was born on 27th Jan and this year marks his 177th birthday.

I poured over his books as a child and have fond memories of me and my brother watching the old Disney movies.  I was fascinated by Alice’s world and could relate to her as she wasn’t always sickly sweet and well behaved.  Sometimes the characters scared me, there were definately some dark scenes, but I still turned the pages intrigued by this upside down world of rabbits, sleepy dormice and evil queens.

Lewis Carroll’s work was probably my first introduction to poetry too.  Even now I can recite the Jabberwocky, Father William and The Walrus and the Carpenter.  In a world where kids are reading books about wizards, vampires and witches, his books are still fantastical and relevant to young readers today and in my mind should be on every bookshelf.

Whose your favourite Lewis Carroll character?
