FORGET WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT THE NATURE OF MAGIC

In a world where an industrial revolution is powered by magic, Tyen, a student of archaeology, unearths a sentient book called Vella. Once a young sorcerer-bookbinder, Vella was transformed into a useful tool by one of the greatest sorcerers of history. Since then she has been collecting information, including a vital clue to the disaster Tyen’s world faces.

Rielle Tyen

Elsewhere, in an land ruled by the priests, Rielle the dyer’s daughter has been taught that to use magic is to steal from the Angels. Yet she knows she has a talent for it, and that there is a corrupter in the city willing to teach her how to use it — should she dare to risk the Angels’ wrath.

But not everything is as Tyen and Rielle have been raised to believe. Not the nature of magic, nor the laws of their lands… and not even the people they trust.

Duffy’s Review

Hachette have worked hard on a great marketing campaign, detailed design and beautiful illustrations with good reason.  When the book arrived in the mail, I was immediately impressed with the book jacket. It conjured up thoughts of Assassins Creed, The Knights Templar and worlds set both in the past and future.  My second thought was 550 pages! That’s a big read!

Magic conjures up all sorts of things for me; Merlin, Pagan style rituals, Paul Daniels and Dynamo. It’s a word that can put you off (I reviewed a book not long ago about Fairies and it was as far from Tinkerbell as I could imagine), or intrigue you.  It’s up to you, which camp you sit.

Thief’s Magic has two stories; That of Tyen Ironsmelter, and that of Rielle Lazuli.  They live in different worlds and magic is distributed, used and respected differently in each.  I must admit, I preferred the adventures of Tyen a little more. His relationship with Vella, the sentient book, blurs from loving an object to loving a person and it was interesting to see this unfold by Tyen referring to the book from ‘it’ to ‘her’. Yet, Rielle’s tale was no less colourful and brought up modern day thoughts of control, rules, feminism and social etiquette. It’s a very detailed set up to a trilogy which I hope is full of magic, fantasy worlds and action.

YA readers who are looking for something a little more substantial will enjoy this read and the journey Rielle and Tyen go through to find their truth. I’m sure Trudi Canavan will attract new readers with this trilogy.
