the swap by Robyn Harding book review by duffythewriter

‘Harding has outdone herself with The Swap. This is a provocative, edgy thriller. Just when you think you’ve got a handle on it … you don’t’
Samantha Downing, author of My Lovely Wife

Low Morrison is not your average teen. You could blame her hippie parents or her dreary, isolated island hometown. Whatever the reason, Low just doesn’t fit in – and neither does newcomer Freya, an ethereal beauty and once-famous social media influencer.

After signing up for Freya’s pottery class, Low quickly falls under her spell. Buoyed by Low’s adoration, Freya is compelled to share her darkest secrets and deepest desires. Finally, Low feels a sense of belonging … until Jamie walks through the studio door. Freya, Jamie and their husbands become fast friends, leaving Low alone once again.

Then one night, after a boozy dinner party, Freya suggests swapping partners. It should have been a harmless fling between consenting adults, but instead, it upends their lives.

And provides Low with the perfect opportunity to unleash her growing resentment.

Duffy’s thoughts on The Swap

I love a dark twisty thriller and don’t shy away from the darker side. However, real life is delivering that for me and the world right now, so I’ve found myself looking for something a little different to read to escape the dumpster fire that is 2020!

The Swap was a perfect distraction. The character creation is perfection and just when you think you have it all sussed out, you realise you didn’t at all! The writing is sharp and from the first page I was intrigued and a little wary of young Low.

Freya is a character you will love to hate and the cast of supporting characters all stand up solidly, framing the story and adding individual value as the plot unfolds. The plot twists are crazy!

If you loved Big Little Lies, you will love The Swap. I could easily see this as a Netflix or HBO series. Sharp, suspenseful, salacious and original, I thoroughly enjoyed the read. I would suggest it as the perfect holiday read, but seeing as we can’t go anywhere, I will instead suggest it for those cold winter nights at home, or staycation read!
