I don’t usually jump on the bandwagon. I’m not having twitter rows about Go Set A Watchman, I would rather chew my own big toenail than read 50 Shades Of Grey, I managed to avoid peplum skirts and I didn’t invest in a Uniqlo puffer vest for winter (although I think most of Sydney has). However, I am unashamedly onboard with domestic noir.

The Hand That Feeds You starts off smart and finishes quick.  We step into the story when Morgan comes home one day to find her beloved fiancé seemingly mauled horrifically to death by her pet dogs; Cloud, a Great Pyrenees Morgan has had since a puppy and two highly suspect pit bulls called Chester and George, which she rescued from death row at the local pound two months ago.

She is in shock after the grisly discovery of Bennett, her caring, very attentive, very intense fiancé and whilst the grief weighs down on her, she discovers little by little, bit by bit, that Bennett may not be quite who he seemed.

This book is very suspenseful, I knocked the book over in an evening and a half, always a good sign; I just couldn’t put it down, just one more chapter, one more page. The supporting cast of characters were all suspects in the beginning, yet I picked the perpetrator not long after they appeared in the plot. To be honest though, this didn’t spoil the book for me at all. I had a sneaky suspicion about this character, but had no idea until the end how they did what they did. I also don’t think finding out the whodunnit early on can spoil a book, if the book is written well; After all, we all knew Hannibal Lecter ate people and Joe from YOU was a psychopath and it didn’t stop us being scared, in suspense, or disappointed did it?

If you loved YOU, Gone Girl, Where They Found Her, or The Stranger (All reviews which can be found on my blog!), you are going to have a good time. It also has a stunning book jacket which feels velvety in your hands and will look wonderful on your bookshelf.

Maybe read it in the daytime though, hearing a dog bark in the middle of the night is a little unnerving mid-read!

The Book Jacket

Morgan’s life seems settled – she is completing her thesis on victim psychology and newly engaged to Bennett, a man more possessive than those she has dated in the past, but also more chivalrous and passionate.

But she returns from class one day to find Bennett savagely killed, and her dogs – a Great Pyrenees, and two pit bulls she was fostering – circling the body, covered in blood. Everything she holds dear in life is taken away from her in an instant.

Devastated and traumatised, Morgan tries to locate Bennett’s parents to tell them about their son’s death. Only then does she begin to discover layer after layer of deceit. Bennett is not the man she thought he was. And she is not the only woman now in immense danger …

#3.5 out of 5 from me. A solid suspenseful thriller.
