Instant Family Synopsis

When Pete (Mark Wahlberg) and Ellie (Rose Byrne) decide to start a family, they explore the world of adoption. When they meet a trio of siblings, including a rebellious 15-year-old girl (Isabela Moner), they find themselves unexpectedly speeding from zero to three kids overnight. Now, Pete and Ellie must hilariously try to learn the ropes of instant parenthood in the hopes of becoming a family.

INSTANT FAMILY is inspired by the real events from the life of writer/director Sean Anders and also stars Octavia Spencer, Tig Notaro and Margo Martindale.

Duffy’s Thoughts On Instant Family

Let’s be honest, Mark Wahlberg has attached himself to some real turkeys recently. Mile 22 (unwatchable), Daddy’s Home 2 (could be blamed on the recent Ferrell curse), and I can’t even begin with Transformers: The Last Knight.  So, when I was offered tickets to an early movie screening of Instant Family, I was extremely hesitant and nearly didn’t make to my seat in the theatre.

But, the chemistry between Wahlberg and Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids, Bad Neighbours) shines on screen. Within minutes of watching Instant Family, I was given great hope that Wahlberg was not yet ready to be relegated to ‘Adam Sandler roles’. The original take on fostering and the fact that writer/director Sean Anders has a personal connection to this story makes for very enjoyable watching.  There’s a careful balance of comedy and tender, sometimes difficult moments which keeps the movie light and funny. Yet, there is enough depth of character and plot to invest in the characters and care about what’s happening. I particularly enjoyed Mama Bear Grandma Sandy played by Margo Martindale and Isabela Moner who plays Lizzy, a complicated teenage girl trying to find her place in the home.

Currently sitting at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes before general release, this is set to be a great start for the return of the Mark Wahlberg we know and love.

Instant Family is in all good cinemas from Jan 10
