Win Yourself A Free Audiobook About A Topic You Love!

In60Learning. Ever watched a movie and thought ‘I wanna know more about that time in history.’ I do it all the time. I watched the Black Dahlia and wanted to know about old Hollywood. Watching the Social Network spurred me on to know about the Winklevoss twins and Baz Luhrmann made me want to revisit Shakespeare after falling in love with his visual epic Romeo and Juliet.

I used to head to Google and scroll through Wikipedia, down the rabbit hole of the internet to find out more about the era’s depicted in my favourite movies. But now I’ve found a better way!

Get Yourself A Quick Audio History Lesson in Under 60 Minutes!

I’ve reviewed In60Learning before on my blog and promoted them as a great study tool.  Now they have a new range of titles and audiobooks. They explain all the important things you need to know about a topic and all within an hour! In60Learning kindly gave me access to 3 audiobooks and I picked them to find out the real history behind some of my favourite movies. All I had to do was fire up the Audible app and listen to the book before bed, or on my way to work. The narrators were easy to listen to and the bitesize pieces of information are carefully collated to ensure they stay in your head.

Gangs Of New York (2002)

gangs of New York movie review in60Learning

Daniel Day-Lewis is in his element and commands the screen as Bill The Butcher in one of my favourite movies. The sordid, seedy, opportunistic world of the notorious Five Points area in lower Manhattan, New York, is conveyed in a detailed and atmospheric cinematic experience, showing New York before it became the New York we know today. Cameron Diaz is seen here in one of her meatier roles as crafty turtledove Jenny Everdene and stellar roles played by Leonardo Di Caprio as the young ‘Amsterdam’ and my favourite Liam Neeson as the leader of the dead rabbits Irish Catholic immigrant gang bring depth to the screen. The dead rabbits and  ‘the natives’ antagonise each other as tensions boil over, culminating in the real-life New York riots of 1863.

Gangs Of New York. A classic Scorsese movie, if you haven’t seen it. You should.

City Of Angels (1998)

city of angels In60learning

Yes, you read that correctly. City Of Angels is in one of my top movie listings. It has one of my favourite songs of all time (Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls) and this really is one of my favourite Nicholas Cage movies and the ONLY time can tolerate Meg Ryan on screen. Cage plays Seth, an angel who is thought unseen until he is felt by Dr Maggie Rice (Ryan) in a Los Angeles hospital. Seth then gets the chance to see what earth is like and chooses to give up the eternal for the now and for love. This movie is pure 90’s nostalgia and I’m not sure there will ever be a time that I can watch this movie all the way through with dry eyes.

Learn about the origins of Los Angeles and what makes this city so iconic around the world.

The Great Gatsby (2013)

The Great Gatsby In60Learning

The Great Gatsby received mixed critical reviews, but audiences lapped the movie up making this Baz Luhrmann’s biggest grossing movie which is pretty impressive when you consider his portfolio of work. Luhrmann adds his fantastical charm and vibrant cinematography to the 1925 literary classic by F.Scott Fitzgerald with a colourful cast of characters. Leonardo Di Caprio (who makes it into 2 of my movie reviews!) plays handsome and enigmatic billionaire Jay Gatsby and Tobey Maguire plays Nick Carraway who becomes neighbours and then a friend to Gatsby during the decadent height of the roaring twenties.

With every high, there comes a low and we follow Gatsby and his shallow friends as they take everything they can, simultaneously losing grip on what’s important and real. The costume design is outstanding and that’s reflected in the Oscar nod along with a great soundtrack and that infamous ‘cheers’ from Di Caprio that spawned a million memes, and took my breath away on the big screen.

Immerse yourself in the roaring twenties, flapper girls and feathers!
