Some secrets you try to hide. Others you don’t dare let out … Twin Peaks meets The Dry in a deliciously dark and twisted tale that unravels a small town.

Ambitious young journalist Marlowe ‘Lo’ Robertson would do anything to escape the suffocating confines of her small home town. While begrudgingly covering the annual show for the local paper, Lo is horrified to discover the mutilated corpse of Lily Williams, the reigning showgirl and Lo’s best friend. Seven strange symbols have been ruthlessly carved into Lily’s back. But when Lo reports her grisly find to the town’s police chief, he makes her promise not to tell anyone about the symbols. Lo obliges, though it’s not like she has much of a choice – after all, he is also her father.

When Lily’s murder makes headlines around the country and the town is invaded by the media, Lo seizes the opportunity to track down the killer and make a name for herself by breaking the biggest story of her life.

What Lo uncovers is that her sleepy home town has been harbouring a deadly secret, one so shocking that it will captivate the entire nation. Lo’s story will change the course of her life forever, but in a way, she could never have dreamed of.

Duffy’s Thoughts on Catch Us The Foxes

Catch Us The Foxes is a complex thriller set in the small, real-life, Australian coastal town of Kiama, where dark secrets lurk in the trees. Marlowe, our protagonist, is an ambitious and sometimes a little bit ‘up herself’ character who is out to expose the truth about the strange carvings found on her dead best friends back.

Marlowe is hellbent on finding out who really killed her best friend, but as she works to uncover the truth, she seizes the opportunity to make a name for herself as a journalist and escape the clutches of her small home town, whatever it takes.

I really enjoyed Catch Us The Foxes. Nicola West is a talented writer, that much is true, and I loved the unique nature of the story. Why did Nicola choose to set this story in a real town, her own childhood town? What do the locals think of this exposure? Is there truth to the dark rumours?

There are so many twists and turns to the book, by the time I got to the last few pages, I wasn’t entirely sure how the ending would pan out, and I’m not entirely sure West did either. As a result, I found the end of the book a bit like the end of Wayne’s World, where Wayne and Garth roll out different endings. This didn’t diminish my enjoyment of Catch Us The Foxes, though, and I highly recommend it if you enjoy a dark, twisty thriller.
