what is sophrology?

Sophrology is a pioneering self-help method for stress management and personal development

Sophrology is a dynamic relaxation, stress-management and personal development technique, which is steadily growing in popularity in the UK. Sophrology is already extremely popular on the continent – especially in France, Switzerland, Spain and Belgium, where sports stars and popstars, among others, have used the techniques to overcome fear of failure, manage stress and anxiety, beat insomnia, prepare for big events and fulfil their true potential. It is also used as a tool to help women prepare positively for birth, and in the workplace to enhance employees’ wellbeing.

This accessible book by a London-based expert in this field will open up the world of Sophrology to a worldwide audience and help readers feel equipped to cope with the ups and downs of life with a flexible and effective method. By learning to relax and connect with your inner resources you will discover strength and power you never knew you had, and feel happier and more balanced. Featuring practical tips, case studies, and a Sophrology practice audio, this is a must-have self-help resource.

Duffy’s Review Of The Life-Changing Power Of Sophrology

So, my first thought was ‘Sophro…what?!’ I had not even heard this word before I read the book and wasn’t sure what to expect at all. I use the Headspace app now and again, and I’ve practised meditation exercises on and off throughout my adult life, so I wanted to understand how unique sophrology is and whether it was any good?

The first part of the book explains the origins of sophrology. It isn’t some ancient undiscovered practice, in fact, it’s only 60 years old and originated in Spain. Interspersed with the explanation of sophrology and its basic principles are ‘testimonials’. I skipped past these completely. I have no idea if they are real people, but the gushing promotion of life-changing happiness and all problems solved from trying this practice just seemed far too salesy and preachy to me, so I skipped on by to reach the actual exercises and gave them a go for a few days to see if there was any benefit, and I found there was!

The exercises are easy to follow and only take ten minutes max to complete. The aim is to rid your body of stress and negativity, filling it instead with happiness, positivity and confidence. I tried the basic breathing to start with and honestly felt that the tension in my neck was released a little and my shoulders relaxed and sat a little lower afterwards too. Tuning in to your body does help you recognise feelings both physical and mentally and address them. I particularly liked the practice of imagining living in a bubble, I wish I could really do that sometimes!

Will the Life-Changing Power Of Sophrology change your life miraculously? No, I don’t think a book alone can do that. But, I do think the practice of sophrology can help reduce stress and anxiety, even boost your confidence and help you calm down in stressful or anger filled situations quickly.  There are even ‘on the go’ options which you can use at work, or while studying to get you through an exam, or a stressful period at work.

If you practice meditation and mindfulness, you may not find anything too new here, but if you’re looking at ways to connect with yourself, de-stress, or overcome a social anxiety this book will help you do that in a practical way.
