The Last Wife book review by Duffythewriter

Two women. A dying wish. And a web of lies that will bring their world crashing down.

Nina and Marie were best friends-until Nina was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Before she died, Nina asked Marie to fulfill her final wishes.

Marie thinks she can keep her promise to her friend’s family on her own terms. But what she doesn’t know is that Nina was hiding explosive secrets of her own…

Duffy’s Thoughts On The Last Wife

I thoroughly enjoyed Karen Hamilton’s debut novel The Perfect Girlfriend which was a crazy, thrilling ride and was so out there, like all your crazy exes rolled into one! It was quite fun to read! I was expecting the same with The Last Wife, however, Hamilton’s second publication is darker and far more psychological than the first. Luckily I like a dark, twisty thriller.

Marie’s best friend Nina passes away in tragic circumstances and she feels duty-bound to fulfil Nina’s dying promises. It doesn’t hurt either that fulfilling these wishes solves a few problems of her own. However, when tiny truths begin to seep out, Marie begins to wonder if their friendship was really how she recalled it.

There are plenty of twists along the way which is helped by Marie being surrounded by some solid side characters. Nina’s ever-watchful mother, Nina’s husband who needs stability and an anchor in his life, and childhood friends and locals who all have something to say.

It took me a little while to get into this one, and whilst I didn’t like Marie that much, the plot twists and secret reveals kept me engaged.

I prefer The Perfect Girlfriend, but can’t wait to see what Karen Hamilton has in store for us next!
