unf*ck yourself

UnF*ck Yourself is not your average self-help book even though it has a profanity filled title which seems to be the norm these days.  There are plenty of new sweary books out there to get your life back on track, such as Get Your Sh*t Together, The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*ck, and of course UnF*ck Yourself.  Are sweary self-help books the new ‘The Girl in/at/on…” for book titles? Who knows, but this one is a little different to the others I’ve read. Why? Because I woke up this morning knowing I was going to give some of Gary John Bishops advice and mantras a red hot crack.

So What is UnF*ck Yourself All About?

Stuck in a rut? Always looked over for promotion? Jealous that your mates and peers seem to be winning at life while you tread the hamster wheel and eat microwave dinners? This book won’t ask you to gently visualise who you would like to be, in fact, it tells you that you are exactly where you wanted to be, where you chose to settle. Ouch! But, it’s ok! Because as you lick your wounds and recover from the Bishop burn, he gives you practical ways to change your negative thought processes and teaches you to stop listening to your inner critic. Because your inner critic is like a good friend who tells you not to go for that dream job because they don’t want you to leave town.

Is UnFuck Yourself Actually A Useful Book?

There is not a hint of cheesiness, or sickly sweet ‘the universe will come to you’ musings to be found here, which is no surprise considering Bishop is a Scotsman.  Some paragraphs jump out and give you a Glasgow Kiss. Others sit in your brain and stay a while, and as you work through the book some chinks of clarity shine through. I read this book in one sitting, something just ‘clicked’ and I read right through. I know that I often get consumed by my own inner self-critic; hating the way I look, yet not doing quite enough to make any physical change, not backing myself at work when I know I’m right, and not moving on those bigger life decisions because ‘I can look at that properly next month’.

UnF*ck Yourself gave me a sharp smack in the face and then some tools to change it all which I have started to use today! I’ve pumped out two book reviews and started to draft up an article for a freelance client, all before 3 pm on a Saturday!

Will UnF*ck Yourself Work For Me?

There are thousands of self-help books out there which profess to unlock the ‘secret’ so we can all live fulfilling lives with purpose and millions of dollars in the bank. We can’t all be that and it’s silly to think we can, but we can choose at which level we settle. The trick is to love where you settle, not stay there because it’s safe, or you don’t have the confidence to change the way you live. It doesn’t have to be drastically, but enough to bring a little more self-fulfillment and happiness, which is something we can all do and all deserve.
