Kitty Flanagan burning bridges and other hobbies book review

A review of Bridge Burning & Other Hobbies by Kitty Flanagan

‘Shut your mouth Flanagan or you’ll do fifteen in the freezer.’
GARY – FACTORY FOREMAN

Kitty Flanagan has been locked in an industrial freezer in Western Australia, insulted about the size of her lady parts in Singapore and borne witness to the world’s most successful wife swap in suburban Sydney. It’s these valuable lessons from The University of Life that have taught her so many things, including the fact that cliches like ‘The University of Life’ are reeeally annoying.

In these funny, true stories, Kitty provides advice you didn’t even know you needed. Useful tips on how not to get murdered while hitch-hiking, how to break up with someone the wrong way, and the right way, why it’s important to keep your top on while waitressing, and why women between the ages of thirty-seven and forty-two should be banned from internet dating.

Bridge Burning and Other Hobbies is a collection of laugh-out-loud, cautionary tales from one of Australia’s favourite comedians

Duffy’s Review Of Bridge Burning & Other Hobbies

Kitty Flanagan writes like she speaks, and she speaks without a filter. If you’re a fan of her sense of humour and sharp social commentary you will love a bit of bridge burning. This isn’t an autobiography in the normal sense, it’s more a collection of cringe-inducing social interactions from Kitty Flanagan’s life, along with some cautionary tales on life and ex-boyfriends who are dickheads. Let’s face it, most of them are.

You’ll read hilarious anecdotes which will resonate deeply with anyone over thirty. We all know those horrible social faux pas when we were eight years old that still burn with shame and keep us awake at night; The idiotic life choices that should’ve got you killed, and the ridiculous situations that even your wildest imagination wouldn’t put you in. Bridge Burning & Other Hobbies is just like watching a Kitty Flanagan stand-up in your own head (sound creepy much?!).

I have a cautionary tale of my own. By simply reading Kitty Flanagan on my sofa, I managed to scare the sh*t out of my partner.  I would burst into laughter or shout out a surprise ‘HA!’ from the sofa while the poor bloke was trying to watch the footy or some totally boring documentary about the constellations. I got a few scowls and no doubt took a few years off his life. So, my warning to you is to be careful where you read Kitty Flanagan, you may well scare the crap out of someone or look like a mad person laughing at yourself.

One of my favourite reads of the year.
