I was a teenager in the 90’s and even in a little town in England, the grunge scene crept in and took over.  We all embraced it, and the memories I have of my friends and I driving around in our first cars, have Nirvana as a soundtrack.  Playing out of our tape decks with the windows down, or  blaring at empty house parties when our parents went away on holidays. Nirvana were a band who understood the mis-understood.

Montage of Heck is an intriguing documentary, which chronicles the life and legacy of Kurt Cobain, who took his life twenty years ago in April 1994.  This stunning hardback book is a sincere and sentimental, sweet and sour, serious and funny look at the artist and his life.

Even though this is the only documentary and book which has been created and produced with the co-operation of Courtney Love and the Cobain Estate, it still feels raw and honest; Courtney does not come out of this smelling of roses, rather just dirty make-up and Opium.

The photos of Kurt’s personal possessions and childhood drawings, make Kurt human, and more than a musical myth or face on a t-shirt.  The cartoons which accompany interviews and personal recordings of Kurt, drawn by the exceptionally talented Hisco Hulsing, gave an aura of the dark shadow which followed Kurt wherever he went.

This book is a perfect gift for any lover of art and music. Kurt was a man of his time and a lonely junkie. A story which is both brilliant and heartbreakingly sad.

5 out of 5 (if you wore an oversized cardigan and screamed your heart out to Heart Shaped Box)
