Book review @duffythewriter Melody's Key

I get hit up frequently to read and review self-published books, and I say no most of the time.  I’ve been burnt by some real howlers, but somehow Dallas Coryell’s email caught my eye, and I thought I would give Melody’s Key a crack. Faith restored(ish)!

This is labeled a New Adult book which is one of those new genres that has popped up like Domestic Noir which is a favourite of mine.  I don’t mind these new genres, I certainly don’t fit the demographic of New Adult, but anything that sparks an interest and gets people picking up a book is alright by me!

So, what’s Melody’s Key all about?

Teenage Tegan Lockwood is in a funk, her parent’s hotel business is barely surviving, and they cannot afford to send her to University.  Tegan sucks it up and stays at the family business to help turn it around.  As luck and New Adult fiction would have it, global pop sensation Mason Keane arrives at the secluded, peaceful hotel for a break from the business.  Here begins the journey of complicated teenage romance with a good measure of fame and pressure thrown in. A rock & roll fairy tale.

I found the storyline similar to the Nighthawk series of books by Rachael Richey, and if you liked those, you’d enjoy the ride that Melody’s Key offers.  I found it a little predictable and did a little eye roll here and there, but I’m far older than the chosen demographic, and if you check other reviews, readers are lapping it up!  For me, the over descriptive prose became a little exhausting. Dallas can write, and write well, but you don’t need to know every teeny, tiny detail, that needs to be left to the reader’s imagination.  If anything, though, it shows that Dallas h where detail is as talent as a scriptwriter where detail is key (see what I did there?). He also has the black and white photo portfolio, well-branded social media account and creative edge that will win him a legion of younger fans I’m sure.

3 out of 5 for me.  Dallas gets an extra point for the innovative way he has created the songs from the book into his Youtube channel.

If I were twenty years younger, it probably would be a 4.

Melody’s Key Synopsis

“His eyes settled on her…piercing green embers of flame that revealed the ferocity of his pain and passion, yet still shrouded him under veils of ever-deepening mystery that made every ounce of her ache to unravel him.”

Tegan Lockwood’s dreams were dead, sacrificed on the noble altar of duty before they ever had a chance to live. Her entire existence was disappearing into the abyss of apathy as she labored her days away keeping her family’s struggling business alive. There would be no emotion, no color, no beauty in her life. That is, until a mysterious visitor begins to draw her out of the darkness of her past towards something that will challenge the boundaries of her world, and unlock the most deeply held secrets of her heart.
