Love Your Sister

Love Your Sister is the story of a brother and sister, Samuel and Connie Johnson. Samuel is a retired actor, who recently appeared back in the spotlight playing Molly Meldrum on Channel 7’s ‘Molly’ mini series. Connie is his sister, who is suffering from terminal cancer, and inspired Sam to ride around Australia on a unicycle and started the Love Your Sister charity alongside her brother.

The book isn’t what I expected. I have to admit I’m not one for sad stories, or ones of gushing love and over used inspirational lines. This story is real, and what I loved most of all was Connie and Sam’s honesty and openness. They really ‘bared all’ in this story and showed that yes, even people dying of cancer can be a right pain in the backside at times; and that family members have to deal with their own demons and problems, whilst supporting, worrying and grieving for siblings and parents who are either struggling or sadly, dying.

Love Your Sister also gave me an insight into just how hard it is to ‘be seen’ when it comes to raising money, awareness and traction with the big corporates if you are a charity starting out. It really is a case of luck and who you know. The sheer hours of time ploughed into a project, only to have it dashed must be tough to take, and I admire the tenacity of the Johnson siblings to lick their wounds, and get back out there for something they believe in.

A great book which inspires, reveals, and shows the best and worst of human nature in the face of adversity.Love Your Sister

I was asked by Hachette publishing to try some audiobooks. I love the feel of a real book and even struggle a bit on the Kindle app (it’s convenient but not my favourite), so I wasn’t sure how an audiobook would go down.

I loved getting into the routine of an hour or two at night, plugging in, being away from a screen and becoming present in someone else’s story. I would recommend anyone who finds it hard to switch off after work, or gets easily distracted, to give an audio book a go.

Looking forward to hearing more books!
