A Kiss From Mr Fitzgerald

A Kiss From Mr Fitzgerald is a rip-roaring tale of young, headstrong Evie as she breaks away from old school rules and decides to forge a career as an obstetrician. Unheard of for a well-connected girl in the 1920s. In fact, any girl at all should settle for a good husband, hosting dazzling parties, keeping an impeccable house and mastering expert embroidery, if they want to keep away from scandal and a damaged reputation. Not Evie.

The prose is on-point when it comes to putting you in the 1920’s. Natasha Lester’s use of the language at the time was cleverly used. I was in cloudy smoke filled speakeasies and a loud, rambunctious boarding house for girls. I could smell the make-up and heady perfume of the Ziegfeld Follies as they got ready backstage, and felt like a beautiful, graceful, socialite of 1920’s New York as a guest at a staggeringly over the top ball.

I felt anger and frustration as Evie tried to forge her way in the world with closed doors, little support and downright sexism. I also felt triumph at each small win. We may think we have it bad as women today, but I think we need to reflect on how far the sisterhood has come. We have forged ahead and continue to do so.

A Kiss From Mr Fitzgerald has a cover, which really is The Cats Pyjamas and is a perfect gift for any female bookworm. It’s a tale of independence, love, tragedy and grand parties, which really are the butterfly’s boots!

If you loved The Great Gatsby, you will have a wonderful time with this one!

The Book Jacket

If you loved The Paris Wife and Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald, you will devour this deliciously evocative love story of a small-town girl with big ambitions in 1920s New York
It’s the roaring twenties in the Manhattan of gin, jazz and prosperity. Women wear makeup and hitched hemlines and enjoy a new freedom to vote and work. Not so for Evelyn Lockhart, who is forbidden from pursuing her passion to become one of the first female doctors. Chasing her dream will mean turning her back on her family: her competitive sister, Viola; her conservative parents; and the childhood best friend she is expected to marry, Charlie.

In a desperate attempt to support herself through Columbia University’s medical school, Evie auditions for the infamous late-night Ziegfeld Follies on Broadway. But if she gets the part, what will it mean for her fledgling relationship with Upper East Side banker Thomas Whitman – a man Evie thinks she could fall in love with, if only she lived a life less scandalous . . .
Captivating, romantic and tragic, A KISS FROM MR FITZGERALD follows a young woman ahead of her time amid the fragile hearts and glamour of Jazz Age New York.
