females in fiction

I love the growing number of books with strong female leads in fiction, male and female authors are exploring different kinds of heroines in books and it’s exciting to see new twists on fiction genres. To see females who are feminine, yet strong and intelligent is a sight for sore bookworm eyes! We are no longer victims, no longer relegated to lovers and mistresses. Here are five of my favourite reads; from all spaces in time, both in history and fantasy.

Wolf Winter is one deep, cold, stark tale but it has a mother who won’t stop to protect her daughters, whatever evil lurks on the mountain. Melancholy, with a slowly building storyline. This book will get under your skin and make you feel the chills for the mountain.

From one kind of wolf to another. Who’s Afraid is about strong, smart, sexy Tommi Grayson and her story as she realises that she is not only a kickass young woman with bright blue hair, but a lethal werewolf with an entirely different destiny laid out. If you were glued to True Blood, and love a badass heroine. This is your book.

A Kiss From Mr Fitzgerald takes us to 1920’s New York where Evie tries her hardest to break free of her planned life of arranged marriage and embroidery to become a doctor. Unheard of for a woman, and she has to make it on her own to get what she wants. If you love The Great Gatsby, you will love A Kiss From Mr Fitzgerald.

The Soldiers Wife. A young woman on the cusp of war, is left in Sydney to make a life for herself until her husbands return. On his return she has choices to make, revert to be a dutiful wife, or forge ahead to make a better life for her family. Decisions that would have been all too common for women during WW2.

The beautiful soul of blind, yet self sufficient Marie-Laure is wonderful and wiley in the touching All The Light We Cannot See. Marie-Laure keeps her father’s secret safe, and reaches out to find friendship from an unexpected source. This book will give you a serious book hangover.
